The Waterbear is Will Chai’s debut timepiece, born from a passion for meticulous craft and enduring design at WillChai. As a brand built on trust and the importance of the personal touch, we applied the same eye for detail and commitment to quality to horology.
This watch is named after the Tardigrade, or “Waterbear,” a microscopic animal famed for its ability to adapt to all the conditions of the Earth. This watch is engineered with that same breath of resilience. It is a robust diver, hand-assembled to ensure every piece meets the highest standard of quality.

The Waterbear offers a balanced blend of classic dive aesthetics and modern micro-engineering. Our watch is designed to offer maximum value through meticulous detail.
The case features a bold, unidirectional Blue Ceramic Bezel Insert offering extreme scratch resistance and a satisfying 120-click feel. The stunning, textured Submarine Blue dial provides a depth and texture that changes with the light, provoking the shifting colors of the ocean. Bright green Photoluminescent Lume ensures legibility underwater.
The assembly is protected by a Double Dome Sapphire Glass, giving the dial a beautiful vintage distortion while providing modern scratch protection.

The Waterbear is a true tool watch. It is fitted with a screw-down crown and solid screw back to achieve 200-meters of water resistance.
This watch is powered by the self-winding Seiko NH35A calibre, a reliable Japanese automatic movement renowned for its quality and ease of maintenance. This movement ensures dependable daily timekeeping, giving you both durability and peace of mind for decades to come.

As an Honours Health Sciences student at McMaster University, and aspiring doctor, I am trained to focus on complex, human-centered systems, whether it’s bioethics, medical terminology, or the delicate mechanics of a watch movement.
The Origin of The Waterbear
This side project was born in 2018 from a personal passion for horology and a belief that a high-quality, durable timepiece shouldn’t be reserved for massive corporations. I was a dreamer then, as I am now.
